Whoever came up with the expression “sleep like a baby” obviously didn’t have a baby, am I right? We spend weeks, sometimes months getting a nursery together for a baby who ends up sleeping wherever we are lucky enough to get them to sleep. Somehow, it’s still the most important thing to have ready for baby.
I knew (being pregnant with my second) that Cru wouldn’t be sleeping in his own room immediately, but I also knew I needed his belongings to be organized. I procrastinated up until my belly was the size of an inflated beach ball to clean out our spare bedroom, repaint, and turn a cluttered storage room into a nursery. The only thing I knew for certain was: I wanted a black crib, and to recycle some white furniture that was previously used in my five-year old’s nursery.
I picked a simplistic black crib from Amazon, along with a sweet wicker changing basket to sit on top of a white dresser that I quickly painted black on the top and sides. I had searched for months for a glider that was both comfortable and affordable. I eventually gave up and decided to move a beige colored recliner from our living room up to the nursery. But, when I got it up there, everything looked so sterile and “black and white” and the recliner looked completely out of place. My mom ended up finding the cutest neutral colored basket from Found Vintage right downtown; I filled it with cute receiving blankets and went on a mission to find some more neutrals for the room. After scoring a wicker rimmed mirror, and a wooden shelf from At Home, then throwing a blanket over the back of the recliner, the room finally started to pull together.
My best friend, Megan, is an incredibly talented local artist. When she had asked me what I needed for the baby, I sent her a photo of a big canvas painting of a water color cow from Kirkland’s (priced at $99.99). I asked her if she could paint me one just like it, and she of course said yes! She used the perfect colors to neutralize the room and pull everything together. The cow painting is honestly one of my favorite pieces in the room, not only because it’s more perfect than the overpriced store-bought version- but it has added such sentimental value to the nursery.
After a few weeks of my poor husband moving furniture around, hanging shelves and photos, and stepping back with me (over and over, and OVER) to check out the room- it was nearly complete. The only thing I was missing was a little bit of green! I visited the Havre de Grace Farmers Market where I discovered Explorganics Plant Shop. Back then, the owner, Shannon, had a stand set up every weekend! I picked up a few unique little cuties (that you can NOT find at your local Home Depot or Walmart garden center) and voila, Cru’s nursery was complete!
Cru is now three months old. He has slept overnight in his crib a grand total of ZERO times, and has taken approximately three naps in his own room. I find myself stepping in to admire it from time to time. He’s been ready to move to his new room, it’s me dragging my feet on this one. He has his whole life to enjoy his own room, right? For now, I’ll keep admiring the clean, organized, and basically untouched nursery because in a few months, the floor will be covered in toys and this room will finally be lived in.
